The routes through the Alps have always been of crucial strategic importance. In Bellinzona several routes come together within a small area: an ideal place to control transit traffic.

The three Castles of Bellinzona, Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro together with their fortress walls were built in the Medieval Age and have been both the northern border of the Plain of the Po and a southern bastion of the alpine valleys.
