The Ritom funicular railway is operated by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS) and was built in 1921 when the Ritom hydroelectric power plant was commissioned. With an inclination of 87.8%, it is among the world's steepest passenger carrying funicular railways. It climbs 786 m over a track length of only 1369 m. The railway can transport up to 100 persons per hour up and down the mountain. The track ends at Piora at an altitude of 1793 above sea level, a popular starting point of many magnificent hiking trails.
